Me, Tarvo, as also uninformed in this matter, say that I don´t totally agree. It´s acceptable to killing whales to some limits for food. It´s Island´s cultural habitat as we kill beasts, catch fishes. People has been and still are hunters. But, yes there is too less information to take a strong position.
So, if you are not overreacting keep going, girls!
Of course Susserdaja, everybody knows you, I don´t know why we bothered to write an address on that envelope at all!

Of course it is okay to hunt animals for food! Nobody argues against that! But there is a limit in nature..if u hunt too many animals, the whole balance of nature will suffer because of that. We should be careful and consider all the aspects of hunting animals, destroying nature and environment etc...For me it is not an excuse that it is economically good, that u get lot of money for it..in some point we have lot of money, but we have fucked up the world..so whats the point living in the world where you have pockets full of money, but nature is fucked up, no balance in nature, air polluted, people eating allkind of shit, genetically changed food. Are we going to eat money?? breathe money??..ok, sorry, I got a little bit carried away..
Hunting too much whales is not problem only for Iceland, also for Japan and many other countries. Every country makes mistakes, in every country there are many idiots who think that temporary profit is better than eternal beauty of nature..
It is too easy to live and think that everything is okay in the world, to close your eyes and live in dreams..but the reality is that we have fucked up the world..and most of us say, that it is impossible to do anything to save it...maybe it is true, i dont know..but i dont want to confess to my grandchildren that I fucked up their future because I wanted to earn some fast money..

O my lord, so true, so true!! This is just what the government decided, the icelandic nation doesn´t decide anything( like the Kárahnjúkar thing, im sure you know about that to). Unless the government starts to listen to what people in iceland wants, nothing will change..

So, when I wrote my last immortal comment, I had to hurry to drinking activity. But now, time has come again.
So, Tanel, your EAT SOMETHING ELSE is in dissention with your opinion of hunting for food (which I agree). Joke has become to point of arguing.
And, drottningin min, you are right I don´t know almost anything about this matter, we don´t have whales, so in this sense, problem is far from me. And actually we are also bringing tourists here to Estonia, where they can basicly kill wildboars for fun. Of course the meat and skin will used not just left into woods and amount of animals they can kill is strictly limited, killing beasts in Estonia is regulated. There are species we have to kill even we don´t necessary have the need for food or skin. We have to kill them for keeping balance, cause when there is too many wolves for example they are beginning to threaten population of goats. So, I don´t know, but I think in Iceland you have also some regulations and limits for these kind of matters.
It´s necessary to kill to reduce population of one species for helping survive another. And as I said earlier of course it´s normal to kill for food also, humans are predators like jackals, foxes - top of the chain of food. So, killing for food was, is and will be normal as part of the way nature is functioning. But even here are some limits like Tanel said, we can´t brake the balance.
It´s not so easy, is it?
But, Koffi, your "it s such a small amount that it doesn´t count!" If you say like that and think about killing for food or regulating populations, I will drink beer with you, eat whale and dance on the table. But, if you say like that and think about killing til gamans, to attract tourists to get money from them and braking rules of nature with that, then I just don´t agree with you. Then even one whale is too many. Like quite often - this is also question of principle.
Thank you for your opinions, I need them to find my own truth, which often may not harmonize with yours.

Ok Tanel, we ARE killing people. Picture this, you are sad about Iceland hunting 9 whales and while your sad about that there are wars in the world, children in africa are dying because of poverty, people are drunk driving and killing people. There are more demonstrations now (because of a few whales dying) than when Bush started the war in Iraq. So think a little bit about this!!

Hofi...if u had read previous comments carefully then u had understood that there is nothing wrong with fishing, as long as these fishes are not endangered species. I also fish if I have a possibility, it is a cool and relaxing activity.
Also u can hunt some whale-species, but not all of them, because some of whale-species are really endangered. We can hunt all the animals as long they are not endangered, because if we kill them all, then we cant bring them back, never again.
And by the way, when Bush started Iragi war, there were massive demonstrations all around the world, in England, in France, in United States.
Who cares......

Thank u, Hofi, it was very good and scientifically well argumented document. We just have to trust now your government that they will take whale-hunting under their control. I know it is quite hard thing to do, because it is impossible to control all the hunters, how many whales and which species exactly are they hunting etc.
And if u have read this document yourself, then u noticed the words "sustainable level"..this is the keyword! And this is what it is all about. And scientists are argueing about where is this "level" exactly..
One thing that made a good impression - attitude of sjavarutvegsraduneyti (we have some difficult words in Estonian, which we use like indicators of drunkness. When you can say these words - you are not drunk enough. But in Iceland all estonians are constantly drunk if we use the same method there) and their explanations to the people. But I have still some questions, maybe I will ask them later.
